Our family life was pretty awesome. Good jobs, a home to call our own, and two amazing children. Ben (7) and Elan (3) were the best of friends. Running through the sprinkler, sliding into the paddling pool, or Ben hurrying to after school care to see Elan after a day of being apart, they were always doing things together. But one fine July day their togetherness came to an end. Elan's body betrayed her, sending her into seizures, one on top of the next until she slipped into unconsciousness, only to be sent into the next seizure. Her body was stiff, her eyes rolled back, unable to communicate. I foolishly thought children's Tylenol could break the cycle but it was no match for Elan's illness. The tiny bit of medicine I managed to get into her may have given us an hour or two of consciousness; if only we'd known they would be her last.
During a span of about six hours and after every possible illness had been ruled out by clinicians from the Stollery ER and the PICU, all that remained was the shell of a former princess. After Ben had his final moments with his baby sister, and after our assembled family and friends took time to say goodbye, we snuggled her for the last time. The Freezing Father's Fundraiser was born after ten hard years of grieving, which is never finished. We will grieve Elan's loss until we die.
The care Elan received at the Stollery Children’s Hospital was best available anywhere in the world. Because of this we never have to wonder if the outcome would have been different had we been somewhere else. That thought is something we simply could not live with. We believe that we have a responsibility to support the Stollery and the families and patients it serves. This year our goal is to raise $15,000 for equipment needed for the newly renovated Pediatric ICU. We are also dedicating this years fundraiser to the hospital's nursing staff whose amazing dedication to patient and family centred care gives the Stollery its kind and compassionate soul.
